Lagos

Lagos

Lagos was once one of the most welcoming shelters on the Portuguese coast. Its walls were built during the reigns of D. Manuel I, D. João II, and D. Filipe I, which vehemently protected the city against piracy and threatening fleets.

Today the scenery is different and offers its beholders tranquility and the much-famed Sun.

The mild and pleasant climate combines with the sky. This area is also distinguished by the quality tourism that occurs in the 15km of the southern coast, where there are grottoes and sandstone and limestone sculptures carved by the sea. It is not for by chance that this area is called "Paradise". The ideal place to enjoy the tranquility you so desperately need.

Historical Center

Downtown is where you will find the heart of Lagos, with bars, cafes, restaurants, and attractions. Some streets are pedestrians only, so the best thing to do is a walk around downtown.

In Praça Infante Dom Henrique you will find the Santa Maria Parish Church built in the late 15th century, this church underwent expansion work in the mid 16th century and repair work in the following century because of the earthquake that Portugal suffered in 1755.  On the other side of the square you can find the slave market, one of the first slave markets in Europe.

We also recommend a stroll along the waterfront of the Avenida dos Descobrimentos, going east you will come across the Ponta da Bandeira Fort, built after the restoration of Portuguese independence in the 17th century.

This gate and the remaining walls were built and extended at various periods and by different folk: first built by the Carthaginians or Romans, they were later extended by the Arabs; later, in the 14th and 16th centuries, they were again extended by the Portuguese to accompany the growth of the city.

There are many family activities and outdoor activities from young to old, including golf, canoeing, biking, walking, and exploring the sea with a boat. Lagos also has one of the largest Marinas. Here many luxury boats are kept and tours are provided. Lagos is attractive, bustling and with its rich history attracts and delights thousands of visitors and residents.
